Using a Batt Bin to recycle your batteries helps to conserve natural resources and avoid harmful substances leaching into landfill. The Batt Bin Home range (both plastic and glass) has a child resistant lid to provide children and animals with increased protection from button cell ingestion. By using a Batt Bin in your home or small business, you can make a positive impact on the environment and your community.
You can put all handheld batteries in a Batt Bin. This includes; button cell, AAA, AA, C, D, 9V, and CR2032 type batteries. Please ensure you tape the end terminals of the battery to avoid any residual charge reacting. Do not put lithium ion batteries in a Batt Bin (i.e. phone or camera batteries).
More information on lithium ion batteries will be available in an upcoming blog post, however in a nutshell, Lithium ion batteries are mostly found in devices such as phones and portable cameras. They are rechargeable batteries and have a slightly different chemical make-up than that of lithium alkaline handheld batteries (i.e. AA, 9V, etc...). Because of the lithium ions chemical make up, they are susceptible to undergoing a thermal runaway, which is when the lithium-ion cell enters an uncontrollable self-heating state and can be very difficult to manage and put out. Information on where you can take your lithium-ion batteries for recycling is coming soon.
Batteries pose a significant risk to our environment if not disposed of correctly. They leach corrosive chemicals into the earth and can cause fires. So dispose of them correctly!
Our Batt Bin Home range (both plastic and glass) are fitted with a child-resistant lid, but as stated in the product description for both, they are not child safe. Just like you would never leave medicines or hazardous chemicals in reach of children (even though these are also packaged with a child resistant lid), nothing is ever truly child-safe. Having a child-resistant lid for batteries is the best option for ensuring batteries are stored safely in your home as well as preventing batteries going into the rubbish, where they can cause fires and leak corrosive chemicals.
